About:
II Cavallo was Leonardo's only recorded plans for a sculpture. However, it was never completed because all of Leonardo's materials were scrapped to make cannons for the French invasion. Fifty-eight thousand pounds of tin and copper that he had spent years of collecting were gone in an instant. After that II Cavallo became history but still insipiration for many artists. In 1994, a man named Charles C. Dent took his inspiration and made a small 8 foot clay model of the horse. But Charles died before it was completed. Nina Akamu in 1997 decided to try again and create the full sized sculpture, but instead of one large sculpture, the horse was built piece by piece. Finally completed in 1999, Leonardo's and Charles' names were carved into the eyes of the 15 ton sculpture and it was sent to Italy as a thanks from the Americans for the renaissance.
